Paying on Steam with a prepaid virtual card
Steam doesn’t say whether prepaid Visa or Mastercard cards work. Its subscriber agreement lists a “prepaid card” as one way to fund a Steam Wallet. Steam never accepts a payment that fails the CVV check, and where it has no local currency, including Türkiye, it charges in US dollars.
Steam payment rules
Summarised from Valve’s own help pages on 28 Oct 2026. Rules change, so open the source before you rely on it.
- Payment methods
- Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, JCB and PayPal in the default region, local methods in other regions, plus Steam Wallet codes and gift cards.
- Prepaid cards
-
by credit card, prepaid card, promotional code, or any other payment method accepted by Steam
That’s how Steam’s subscriber agreement describes funding a Steam Wallet. It doesn’t say whether a bank-issued prepaid Visa or Mastercard counts. - Billing currency
- About 37 store currencies, including USD, EUR, JPY and KRW. Where Steam has no local currency, prices are in US dollars (European countries use euros). Turkish lira isn’t a Steam currency.
- Card and country
- Steam’s agreement forbids using IP proxying or other methods to disguise where you live.
- Card checks
- Steam never accepts a payment that fails the CVV check. Money your bank holds for a failed payment is returned under the bank’s policy, which can take up to 10 business days.

Deposit crypto, buy a card, pay its activation deposit, and wait for the card details to appear in your Cardn3 dashboard.
How buying works -
2
Open payment settings
Open the billing or payment settings of your Steam account.
-
3
Enter the card details
Type the card number, expiry date and CVV, and the billing address shown with your card details, exactly as written.
-
4
Cover every charge
A prepaid card can only pay what it holds. Keep enough balance for each charge, including tax and any currency conversion.
Steam saves your card at checkout. If a purchase fails, you can usually retry from your saved cart. Wallet top-ups are capped at US$2,000 (or the local equivalent) per 24 hours.
Why Steam declines a card, and what to do
A declined payment doesn’t take money from a Cardn3 card. Work through these in order.
-
1
Wrong CVV
Steam never accepts a payment that fails the CVV check. Copy the 3-digit code from your Cardn3 dashboard.
-
2
Wrong billing address
Steam has a separate decline for an incorrect address. Enter the billing address exactly as shown with your card details.
-
3
Online spending limits
A card can be limited in how much it spends online in a set period. Check your card’s balance and ask support about its limits.
-
4
Held money after a failed payment
Steam doesn’t collect money from a declined payment. The bank releases the hold under its own policy, which can take up to 10 business days.
